What Are Penny Shares?

Penny Shares have a speculative appeal because of their low value. There is no official rule to define when a stock becomes a Penny Share and different observers may use different criteria. We say that a penny share must be one with a share price of less than £1 OR a market cap. of less than £100 million. The companies may have low net asset value and / or a short operating history. Penny Shares are a speculative investment.

What makes Penny Shares so interesting is they take on so many diverse characteristics. Typically these may be recovery plays, or oversold situations. Many Penny Shares will present asset backed opportunities while some may have little or no net asset value. Some UK Penny Shares will be cyclical, and defensive Penny Shares tend to do well in periods of economic depression. Biotech Companies can make for very speculative investments Blockchain related firms are also emerging as some of the penny shares to watch.

Why Trade Penny Shares

Trading in Penny Shares is one of the most exciting ways of investing money. The buzz of watching a stock rise in value from a few pence up to a few pounds can be exhilarating. However, the possibilities of Penny Shares are often matched by the risks. Its price at any given time may in fact bear no relation to the stock’s underlying value. You may also get involved in penny shares because you have a particular belief in a concept or idea that gives hope for a particular company or perhaps in an emerging industry sector.

Researching Penny Shares

To find the right penny share to invest in you need to look into as many aspects of the company as you can. Learn how the company makes its money and look into the management who run the company. You should assess the companies’ management for both leadership and technical ability – a good combination of the two should predict a bright future. If a company has been floundering then a positive change of management may be imminent and this would be a great time for you to reassess its potential.

Who Should Trade Penny Shares

When investing in penny shares you should be prepared to lose money. Some brokers recommend that you do not invest more than 20% of your entire portfolio in these speculative equities. If you cannot afford to lose any of your capital, have little or no assets, or you are a student or not in steady employment then you should not be thinking about dealing in penny shares. Under no circumstances should you borrow money to invest in penny shares.
